Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei"

These were bought from the BCA auction and were Prof. George Turners fish.

Again, great pictures Nick good.gif

I'm going to show my ignorance here and ask what is "BCA" (British cichlid association? at a guess) and who is Prof. George Turner?

Now about the photos. Is it just me or are yellow tailed Acei one of the hardest fish to photograph? I have been trying for months and I have no truly decent shots! The problem I find is that if you use the flash with yellow tailed acei (personal opinion) it washes out the blue colouration of the fish! I'm sure you agree nick that the fish in your pictures are a great deal blue'r (bluer, unsure.gif that's a difficult one to pluralise) in person than in your pics. Hence I try to get the images with the flash off and all I get is a blurred mess, mainly because the fish don't stay still for a single minute! They are by far the most active fish in the tank and as a result a curse to photograph.

Here are a couple of pics that I have managed to get so far demonstrating the blueness! (not sure if I have posted these before but I did a search and couldn't find any so maybe I haven't)

Quick question nick, do you use an external flash slave? (and I don't mean a person you have to hold the flash rolleyes.gif )

Yeah you are right tanks the flash does wash some of the blue out but they are a fairly pale blue tbh , no where near as deep as some of the Acei I have seen. I think yours look better than mine TBH.
I have an External Flash yes , fire it from above with a cord, defnitely helps.

BCA - British Cichlid Accosiation, yes, it was a convention and auction held at Hull Uni where they study African Cichlids.

Also there was a lecture by Ad Konings , which was brilliant.

Sounds great! I would have liked to have gone to hear what Ad had to say. Did he talk about anything in particular or was it just about african cichlids in general?

I bought a flash slave a couple of months ago but I was only able to sync it with my camera once and then never again. I know what I am going to be doing this evening! I've been meaning to take a couple of pictures of my red shoulder peacocks to should how they are coming along in terms of colouration! Expect pictures tomorrow!

He had 2 talks the first on African Cichlid feeding behaviour backed up by some amazing footage of the different types of fish feeding, star of the show was the Sciaenochromis fryeri which simulated a Mbuna by "bobbing" it`s head down pretending to eat algae to get close to it`s prey (young Mbuna), really was intersting to watch. The 2nd was on Mexican Cichlids.

I`ll look forward to the pics. yes.gif

I agree about acei being a pain to photograph, the little buggers always seem to much just when you get a good shot set up. angry.gif I just have a crappy little 4mp point and shoot, but here's how mine come out on macro w/no flash.

Hijack alert, hijack alert! This is your fault nick for reminding me about the flash slave! so I'm going to post the results here!

The cobue below is the most vicious fish I have in my collection, not too the other fish but if I put my hand in the tank he thinks its fair game. See Those Teeth, They may be small but its quite the nip!

I had thought the peacocks where Aulonocara sturtgranti, but based on a bit of Google image searching I have come to the decision that they are in fact Aulonocara hansbaenschi also commonly know as Red Shoulder Peacocks. Here are a couple more pics if you haven't seen them already.

I almost bought a Acei today. I was not to sure if they were Mbuna or haps though so I bought a "red finned albino". I really don't think that is the name, I will have to call them to get the scientific name.

Acei are beautiful though. What do you feed them? What are your water specs? I would love to get mine that stunning.
