My Blue Ribbon Eel eats! (pics and video)
This is the pics-only post; my other post in Marine And Reef Chit Chat has the story and hi-res video links. Well I wanted to wait to write this until I was sure that my blue ribbon would live. It's been about eight months now, so I think it's time to tell my experiences so other will have the best chance with their blue ribbons. I'll also put videos on Google Video, YouTube, and Putfile (just search for "blue ribbon eel"). All pics and video were taken after six months in the tank... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well the pipe is two inches wide, but the sand is only three inches deep. So the pipe only goes down a bit and then turns (see the pics).

joejoehead: It's a 90. Glad you like it.
demonmagus: Well the videos are real good at showing off the eel's movements... check them out. kpintheshed: I currently feed the BR eel frozen silversides. But he started out on live guppies, then live goldfish, then frozen goldfish. |

Thanks. A few of the books I've read say they only grow to 12" in aquaria.

QUOTE(n3ont3tra @ Feb 22 2007, 09:51 PM) Thanks. A few of the books I've read say they only grow to 12" in aquaria. Which books are they? I have never seen the max size listed so low. I can't recall ever seeing one that small. Most come in around 18" for sale as black juveniles. Are you sure you don't have it confused with another moray, or possibly one of the FW spiney "eels"? SantaMonica, At 3 foot that eel must be starting to get near the female changeover size. Would be great if you could take pics of the eel as it changes to completely yellow. |

Its cool! I love the vibrant colours, is that a snowflake eel checking him out?
When I first saw his full lenght body he looked like a piece of ribbon floating around the tank, hense the name, lol! Very cool! Edit: I also like the tufty thing on his nose. Emma x This post has been edited by guineapigqueen: Feb 25 2007, 05:10 PM |

Yes it is (was) a snowflake... I donated him to the LFS because he tried to pull the BR out of the pipe. As for looking like ribbon, when the BR is out and swimming around, he does look like those ribbons on the end of a stick that you wave around.

Yes, it was a snowflake... had to donate him to the LFS after he tried to pull the BR out of the pipe. And the ribbon-looks are what make him the only eel liked by many people.

You have a very beautiful tank and some gorgeous fish. I just wondered how your sea horse gets on as it looks as though you have a high turnover and from what I've read they prefer lower turnover levels. Also would like to know what species is is and any problems you've had with him.
Thanks |

Glad you like the looks. I believe the turnover is about 10, if I remember correctly. The seahorse is a Brazilian Orange, and has no problem with the flow, since he is so big. He gets pushed down once in a while by the jets on the top, but he likes it and swims back up to do it again. Of course, I hand feed him from a net (he gets in the net with some ghost shrimp), otherwise he would not get enough food.
