They do smell
I was told to use readybrek, but found that it smells bad and quickly also porridge mixed with milk goes off really quickly. I also tried a culture in fish food. I got some out of date flakes and granules and mixed them in water and added worms, the fish loved the worms from this (which were red in colour) but they REALLY stink, so they can't have them anymore Another tip, once you have them growing, start another culture so you always have 2 running, when the 1st one smells too bad, bin it and create a new culture from your 2nd one, etc. If you have fry or small fish, get some they love them.
