Can you put these two types of Cichlids in the same tank? I figure since they are both African's they may get along... But I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I have a 55g tank and I'm looking to set it up as a Cichlid tank.

It's possible, but makes for a very odd looking tank and it's not recommended.

At one point it's thought that lake malawi and lake tanganiyika were the same body of water, and when they divided into 2 seperate entities, the fish trapped in the lakes then went on to evolve into different fish, with similar characteristics. As such Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganiyika have some quite similar fish, it's surprising to see how close they are.

I would recommend however, only going with one type of lake, as it's more fun to keep fish from the same location together in my experience. I keep a lake tanganiyika tank and it's full of interesting behaviour, and some of the fish you can get are spectacular.

I'm actually interested in Malawian Cichlids more so then Tanganyikan because I am a fan of bright vibrant colors... But I love the markings on various Tanganyikan's. I think I'll start out with 2 Malawian's and then try adding in 1 or 2 Tanganyikan's and see how they interact.

Malawian's also seem calmer... The Tanganyikans I see at pet stores are always hyper and nipping at each other.

ive kept both a tangynikan tank, and a malawi tank, the tangynikans are more interesting and better behaviour, malawis are big and colourfull but just swim around endlessly, and breed like rabbits,

you could mix some of the more robust tangynikans with the malawi's, but bear in mind most tangynikans dont get alot larger then 5". this excludes the frontosa cichlid lol.

google search on the diferent species, write down on paper ones you like and there size and temprement, and just put similar ones together, hope that helps smile.gif
