Hello everybody! im new to the forum, ive been readin arround and ive seen theres is a lot of people that knows a lot (wich makes me happy
I read there is a lot of medication offered in pet stores and stuff, but i live in Costa Rica and there arent actually many good stores or they dont offer a lot of products. I recently added a blue tang to my fish tank, since day one he was like scratching against rocks, i though it was normal, then the famous white spot appeard. I read bout temperature getting hotter actually helping with the problem, but i dont have a termostate. I bought Pimafix, has anyone tried it ? or the medicaded food called Spectrum? I was also told bout treating the fish separetlywith formaline. thank you guys |

Some ich meds can interfere with the benificial bacteria in the tank. Some fish also become stressed with some meds.
I had a clown loach with ich along time ago. I was reluctant to use meds. I searched on the loach forum that many people have used salt, but I have also read that salt was bad for loaches, but I decided to give it a try. I remember reading somewhere that fish can adjust small amounts of salinity in the water, ich cannot. I used aquarium salt, regular dosage, but I made sure the salt was dissolved in water first. Then I poure the solution in the tank slowly over a long period of time. I also increased the temp in the tank, since higher temps increases their life cycle. I also reduced the light to only a few hours a day. The reason I figured was, stress causes illnesses in fish. If the fish slept/rested, this would reduce the stress, which is why I reduced the amount of light. I also performed gravel cleanings and water changes more frequent. About a week or so later, there were no more signs of ich on the fish. I kept the treatment for another week just in case. All my fish survived, including all my clown loaches, L-018 gold nugget pleco, cardinal tetras, dwarf gouramis, & 2 angelfish. |

I understand all of the steps but have a few problems. I just switched tanks and last night my levels began to spike because we bought new rock and drift wood for the new tank. Now I have ich and am not sure to do a 50 water change because we are just now spiking and don't want to go through it again. my tank is also set on 74 which I don't know if changing that would kill my fish. Also most of my fish are scaleless, can they get ich too or can I just put my scaled fish in a quarrentine tank. Please help

I just found a few white spots on my Botia kubotai loach. I had ich for the first time back in October, but at that time my loach did not show any symptoms of it. Now I see some white spots on him, but thus far none of my platys, tetras, or pleco. My loach likes his hiding places, so I don't always get as good a look of him as I do my other fish. I onlu see about 3 spots, and only on the back fin...so far.
I live in the USA. What's the best type of medication for my tank? I read through this forum that ICK Guard 2 is good for loaches. Will it also treat ich for my other fish? Even though I dont see any whitespot on them right now, I assume that if the loach has it, then they do as well. Thanks for your advice, Mel Bowman P.S. Nevermind, I see whitespots on everyone. I have Parasite Clear at home...not sure if I should use it or not - ingredients: praziquantel, diflubenzuron, metronidazole, acriflavine. Just thought id put my 2cents in. Abit over a week ago i had all my tanks come down with white spot. I treated it very early. It went away after 6 days. I treated it with normal white spot treatment and put the tanks up to 30'c. Some of my fish did not get it at all, 5 corys and a betta. I thought that was abit weird.

I've had a major Ick infestation tha wiped out just over 1/2 my fish.
I've added the Victoria Green Ick medication and I treated the tank for 8 days. Then I stopped with the medication and thought all was well. About 2 days latter I saw the water go cloudy again and soon after white spots hit the fish again. I then put all fish into a first aid tank (newly bought...yes I know I should have had one earlier I have emptied all water, rinsed and scrubbed the tank and let hot shower water run over the tank for about 15 minutes I have soaked all plastic plants, gravel and rocks in a very high salt solution which was origianlly boiling water for about a day now. I am very concerned about the gravel. Does anyone know if boiling water will kill the eggs stage??? I cannot imagine anything surviving boiling water but would like to know before I get my tank going again and starting the process of maturing the enviromnent before reintroducing the fish. I have rinsed the gravel, boiled the heck out of it and it looks clean...but these parasites are small. I was planning to keep the fish in the first aid tank for about 7 more days to make sure all is well. My basic question is how can I ensure the Ick is not coming back as soon as I put the fish back. Any help would be great. Thank you This post has been edited by Eviltoon: Apr 28 2007, 09:22 PM |

HI , I have an outbreak of white spot and have read the above with interest. I have treated with interpret-first dose then 4 days later and although most are now spot free, I still have a clown loach that is covered. I waited a week, gave another dose 2 days ago but he's still spotty... I realise that I haven't been mixing it with hot water ( mixed it with tank water then put it back in..) which maybe why it hasnt worked.... But when would it be safe to add another dose? I can't add salt as I have loaches and cat fish. Any ideas appreciated x
