when i got my fish tank i was given a box of bits heater lights stones and wot nots

Hmm, they look like air conditoners for airlines... not the cooling type, they take atmospheric moisture out of the airlines, presumably so any nasty stuf in the air is not transfured to the water throug the airlines. Dont hold me to this though.

no i dont think thats it this has an inlet and outlet on it looks like it should have something on the top.

yeah, an air dryer has an in and an out (in for wet air out for dry air)
take it to your LFS if not... |

Funnily enough it looks like an RO unit, but only from pictures i've seen before. Maybe post this in a different section, this section is more often than not overlooked.

To me it looks very much like a water filter (not necesarily as thorough as an RO unit) just like the ones for filtering drinking water. If it is what I am thinking of the blue parts should unscrew/come off to reveale some sort of filter cartrige. If the right filter is fitted it should take out chlorine and heavy metals but not some other chemicals.

see, this is one but this one is more industrial. click its to prevent airbourne bacteria from entering the tank. |
