I was looking at my 75 gallon tank this morning when I came home from work and much to my surpise I spotted a new addition. A baby black swordtail came cruising out of the plants for morning roll call and a few minutes later was joined by a couple of siblings! This really surprised me, one of my black males - Terrel - is the resident male in this tank but most of the girls in with him are juveniles that I bred. The other adult ladies are all visibly still pregnant so I'm going to have to assume that the new babies came from one of my juvie girls, I'm thinking the marigold wag little lady as she appears to have slimmed down some. The babies are big enough to survive and no one seemed to be eyeballing them as a snack so I'm going to leave them be. What shocked me even more though, as I was admiring the new little swordies I spotted 3 baby cory cats scampering around! They look to be about a week old but seem to be doing quite well and were munching down on the flakes that I put in for the big ones. I was pretty surprised to see them as I only put a threesome of paleatus corys in that tank about 2 - 3 weeks ago. Those darn paleatus corys seem to be spawning around the clock any more! But I'm not complaining!

I'm guessing from their size that the batch of babies I found yesterday are about a week or a week and a half old. This morning while giving them their breakfast, I discovered that another little lady gave birth last night! Spotted about a dozen newborns and the majority of them are black! Way to go Terrel!

Congrats on your fry thumbs-up.gif biggrin.gif
If you want to increase your fry survival chances, buy a breeding net to put the swordtail fry in if you havn't a fry tank and buy some catfish pelets for the baby corys as they'll realy appreciate that and you'll get healthier fry that way, i'd also buy some hikari "first bites" or TetraMinfry for the livebearer fry.
Good luck in raising them yes.gif

They'd better hurry up!!!

EDIT: perhaps you could send Terrell down here as well to teach my males what to do tongue2.gif He could also come to "other uses"

Angry_Platy - I spoke with Terrel, but he refuses to leave his ladies, and he also said he wasn't doing the plastic bag thing again! Meri offered to come counsel but only if there are no males to harass her.

You know, you could try the routine I used on Terrel. He wasn't interested in anybody other than Nicky (black female) and then he became ill. I had him in a 10 gallon by himself for about a month and a half after he recovered and gave him a new girlfriend every 3 or 4 days. About the 3rd girl he figured out what he was supposed to be doing with them. (Of course the third girl was Meri so that might have had something to do with it! She's pretty experienced! tongue2.gif ) He seems to have gotten the hang of it since he's fathered at least 2 batches of babies now besides his first batch with Nicky.

I may have to swap Terrel back to the 55 gallon tank, Reuben (my other black male) doesn't seem to be doing very much in that tank. I think he's intimidated by the lyretail females. He chases Nicky around occasionaly but runs away from the lyretails. Maybe Meri needs to spend some time with Reuben now! (She such a good fish - I don't know what I'd do without her!)

Actually the corys have been with me for a few months and have spawned previously. They are just new to the 75 gallon tank, they were on cleanup detail in one of my swordie fry tanks that I just emptied of fry and I decided to put them back into the 75 gallon. Once they start spawning it seems that the problem is more one of getting them to stop spawning! These little guys just keeo going at it. I'm hoping that as my house warms up for the summer they'll take some time off and rest!

Hey Polardbear, congrats on the fry and the little cories as well. My Doris has done it again, got about eighty or so this time. Good thing too since my fry tank was getting to look a little under populated. I have sold thirty so far and have another twenty ready to go when I get the chance to check which store wants them the most. I wish I could get some of the other fish to breed it would be nice to see some other types of babies. I am just a bit jealous cool.gif

Could you possibly get pictures of your baby cories? That'd be brilliant to see!

Congratulations on all the new babies smile.gif
