My dwarf gourami has had ulcers for weeks now, i am still treating the tank and nothing seems to have changed really, but the last few days he developed some more ulcers. And today i notice he hs white fluffy patches on his fins. What do I do? There are a bunch of tetras living with him at present as he gets lethargic if left by himself, the tetras keep him happy
Tank has mature media, water stats are normal, everything normal apart from the fluff. |

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type. Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph. Ulcer are pink or red with a circling of dead white skin around the edges. Interpet anti internal bacteria med is only good on mild bacteria infections. If you have been using the med for several weeks and it done nothing I would stop the med. You need a vet to percribe an antibiotic. Ulcers can also be caused by parasties, any signs of flicking and rubbing against objects in the tank. White fluffy patches on fins is columnaris, sounds like they have secondary bacterial infections now. http://www.fbas.co.uk/Ulcers.html This post has been edited by Wilder: May 21 2008, 06:22 PM |

Tank is 50 litres. Ammo and nitrite are 0, pH is 6.6. Fish definitely has ulcers, 2 other gourmais that i bought with him died from the ulcers. No signs of flicking or rubbing. 6 neon tetras and 6 glowlight tetras are in the tank with him. I am going away in a day and will not be able to get to a vet

Yes columnaris can spead from fish to fish, if the bacteria is a really bad strain in can wipe a tank out in a day.
Myxazin and pimafix for columnaris in the uk. As for the ulcers you need antibiotics if the anti internal bacteria meds doing nothing. I had some fish with some sores I lost about three fish, then the tank settled back down again. I couldn't cure them either with uk meds. http://www.flippersandfins.net/flexibacter.htm This post has been edited by Wilder: May 21 2008, 06:34 PM |
