Pure Novice and beginner - Have just bought a second hand equipped tank with tropical fish - thermostat on heater has gone so currently using a timeswitch to try to regulate the temperaqture. Dont like the fluctuations the fish are having to endure so. I want to buy 2 smaller heaters so I have back up as recommended. My tank is 36x12x15 inches. I did the calculations and it produced a result of 70 watt. Heaters seem to be 25, 75, 100, 200 and up - what do I buy and has anyone any recommendations.

Well, those dimensions put you at about a 28 gallon tank, which would need a 150w heater, so I would say two 75w heaters would do the trick. If one broke, the other would do well enough until you could replace it.

I would run this plan past the members in the "Hardware and DIY" forum and see if you can get any more comments. There are plenty of people here more experienced than me.

ps. Two 100w heaters would not be out of line for this tank either, I think, could go either way.
