A lot of modern day reefers dont use a substrate, I personally use fine Coral gravel

Ive used both smile.gif If its a small tank use a medium corse sand. Not too fine to get blown around but fine enough for rubbish to sit on it rather than go into it. For alarger tank I would use a chunker substrate it gives better scope and supprt I find for rock work and is harder for the fish to kick up all over the place. Just personal preferance really depends what look you like. As long as you stick to a quality brand you wont do far wrong.

nothing other than sugar sized grains aragonite sand, its either that are bare bottom. Everything else = too much of a detritus clogger IMO.
