Hi,
does anyone know much about breeding Red-tailed goodeids? Ive managed to get 6 (3m/3f) and was wondering about the best way to go about breeding them. Are the fry fairly easy to raise? Also what about growth rates, how fast are they?
Thanks everyone, Max.

Hi Max

These are one of the first rare livebeares i ever had.

Their name is Xenotoca eiseni and their easy to keep in the species tank they can be quite fin nippy to other fish.
When happy they breed quite often and will drop fry every 6-8 weeks.
The like cooler temps 65-74F in the best range.

They are not a fast grower but they mature at 4-8 months.
You mainly sex them but the colouration, but the anal fin on the males have a notich, this is the breeding organ, in guppies it called a gonopodium and these fish it's called an anderpodium.

Good luck and enjoy them m8.
P.s. you get then from Trevor or a shop?

Hey Alan, long time no see!
I bought them from a fish shop, just noticed a tank of them in the corner of my eye about 5ft above my head. The tank was covered in algae, but the fish were quite happy. The owner of the shop said that he was trying to "run the tank down", in other words wait till everything died then cover the tank up. They had no price lable on the tank, so I asked and he sold them to me for £10.
I put them in a tank with the humbacks and some Preacox rainbows, but found that they had been nipping fins in there whilst id not been looking. So, I moved them swiftly out and into another tank (smaller) with some apple snails.
By the looks of it I have 3 males and 3 females, not the best breeding ratio i know, but heck, ive got some!
What size are the fry? Ive heard a lot of differing opinions.
Max.

Sex ratio will be fine as your get an alpha male and the other will be put in their place LOL.

Do u have the gold saddle, as seen below

Notice the gold in the middle of the body, as their is a different type which still has the blue and red but no gold to it.

Ok, after one attempt, I have realised that due to their activity, im not going to get a photo of them.
They are doing well. Growing nicely, only two are still too small to be properly sexed. Irritatingly, I only have one definate male........

Where are you based? I have plenty available as I am trying to make some space at the moment for a few other species.

I have had two skinny ones die on me over the last few days, but that has left me with three males and 2 females, and all are very active and happy looking. I have one female that if definatly pregnant, il let everyone know when she drops and also progress with the Humpbacked limias.
