My Platys are increasing at an alarming rate! They are in community tanks but even so some survive from every batch. How long do they normally live? I will then have some idea of how many to ask my lfs to take off my hands!

I've had some as long as 4 years. But 2 years is the average, I believe. If they are good, strong healthy ones and you take good care of them, I don't see why they can't live longer then that.

If they're inbred, they wont live that long.

I've read in a few places that platies can live between 2 an 4years in a well maintained tank.

I agree its between 2 and 4yrs, i have a 2yr+ old platy and she is thriving well so i know its at least 2yrs that they live for, genetics and care for the fish count alot though. If the fish is badly inbred, you would expect the fish to reach 2yrs max, but a healthy, reasonably well bred, well cared for platy should get to 4yrs. How many times the fish gets sick, what sort of enviroment it lives in and what other fish it is put with count alot though in getting to that 4yr mark.

Thanks for the replies. Have no idea if they are inbred as I bought them from Maidenhead Aquatics. Am now busy putting males in one tank and females in another. I know the females will carry on having babies for a while but it is a step in the right direction!
