ive had a figure 8 puffer for quite a few weeks now with a nice set up, housed with only a few other small fish.
today i came to the tank for feeding time, i had checked on the tank only an hour or 2 before and everything was fine.

i went was about to put food in the tank when i saw a half eaten prawn from last feeding time which i dident see earlier.

the figure 8 was at the bottom oof the tank, RIP

he looked a bit misshapen and bubbly, so i guessed he had somehow breathed in air and died.

however there is a peaceof slate at the bottom of the tank and this was covered in a white gunk well a small amount aboout an inch square

this is a very mysterious death to me and i have no idea how this could of happened,

any ideas? thanks... flav

What is your aslinity at? Figure 8s arent freshwater puffers, they need brackish water to survive in the long run. 1.005-1.008 should be good.

The fish probably died for some reason(not quite sure why) and then the slime that protects the fish has come away from its body. You see it quite alot in fishing with dead fish floating on the top with the slime coming away. More commonly in Bream.

How long was your tank set up? Puffers cant tolerate ammonia or nitrites as well as other fish, so if its a new tank that is probably the reason
