Hi all
As you all know no.gif no.gif when breeing our bettas we (collective we) raise the temp gradually up to about 30 degrees. I was talking to a reptile breeder the other day abd he was talking about how he could determine the sex of some offspring by varying the temperature of incubation. Has anyone tried spawning bettas at varying temps, and if so did they notice any difference?

Its just a thought and probably doesn't affect bettas smile.gif

oh nice topic!!! ive got a spawn in now, just released the female this morning and they are at room temp of 24 degrees, im doing this b/c most of my spawns produce high levels of males and i would like to get a load of females, ive heard that this is the case so im trying it, obviously the eggs will take upto 4 days to hatch and the temp cant be increased for 10 days, the female egged up perfectly and he built a nest and are interacting very well, i was suprised to see her hover under the nest waiting for him ive never had a female do this before, will go and get a pic of them now for you.

hmmm ive got the pics but no camaera lead to upload, typical!!! lol will be later

ARH HA i went home and got it

I spawn at 27degrees but most of my spawns are nearly all female. I was told the PH of the water effected the sex but i have never really looked into it

what ph are you at? im at 8.5 i presume you must be at about 7?
our singapore breeder spawns at 6.0 and he has a very high male ratio, which is good for us but i wish at times there were more females to be had from him

Our Ph is about 7.6 and we have been spawning at 30c. So the temp would give us males but the Ph being higher would give females.....I'm guessing we should have 50/50 then possibly?

It will interesting if everyone who had spawns could include their ph reading and temp, and what male/female split they had?
A jolly good pinned thread for the future good.gif
