i have done a little research into the killfish, and read a few different articles which say blackwater extract would be beneficial to keep these happily. and also are they a good community fish, i have rummy nose tetras, a silver tip tetra, serpae tetras, platys, guppys, flying fox and a garra. and also would the extract be harmful to the fish i already have, or to any other newcomers, any help would be fab, thank you, oh and its a 30gal, artifically planted tank.

It would depend on the exact type of killie fish you plan to stock. I belive that their tempraments can vary quite a bit from species to species. My australe gold killies are fine in my community tank, but the male killies will fight unless precautions are put in place. I only have one male now, after he killed the other.

I use Blackwater extract at every waterchange 1 tablespoon in 2 gallons. The fish you have will be ok with it especially the tetras
Your serpae tetra might nip Aphyosemion australe's tail extensions (male) other than that then yes Australe would be a safe bet. IMO the chocolate strain is much nicer but thats only my opinion. Floating plants such as salvinia to help subdue the lighting will make their colouration even more apparent.

will the addition of blackwater extract hinder any decisions to add fish in the future? is there any species of killifish that are colourful that i could add, i saw some today in a display tank at the shop, but it was kinda, plain, greyish, with bits of colour around the edges!

How big are the silver tips.

rummy nose size. he schools with them, he was an accident. i didnt choose him, he just get himself all caught up when i got the rummy noses, then i felt mean putting him back, so i kept him! to explain why he is the only one

Size would have been my only concern, young silver tips are quite small and killifish around 60mm might give them some hassle but yours is quite large going by your comments.

they are easy to keep and are quite placid. (tight fitting lid is essential as with all killifish)

brilliant thank you, just got to find some now, my regular store use to stock them, but their supplier became poor so they stopped getting them, they have told me they are getting a new supplier in the coming months!
