These cory's are going to be the death of me.

I was walking past the 2.5 gallon hospital tank and noticed a lot of commotion. Oh great, the adults are going to breed!

What to do.. Well, I panicked and put them into the 10 gallon fry tank which I hadn't cleaned yet today. Gave the juveniles in there a fright.

If she doesn't start laying eggs withing 15 minutes! There's eggs all over the place, the glass, the AC20 intake tube, a few in the java moss, but she's dropping a lot onto the glass bottom. One (maybe both) of the males is/are eating the eggs as well. Grrrr. I tried to protect some on the bottom by placing plant containers over them but I only had 2. I also dropped a sinking wafer in to lure them away from the eggs. They must have eaten half of the eggs or more. Even momma ate some. I even tried collecting them but totally botched that up.

This has gone on now for over 4 hours. I've lost pretty much of a days work with these. They've settled down now but I'm not gonna put them back into the 2.5.

I've given up cycling the 20. The ammonia was way up there still and 0 nitrite, after almost 3 weeks. I did a 50% water change. Still too high. Massive doses of Prime. Still a bit high. 50% water change again. It's now just between .5 and .75 ppm. Dumped in a sack of ammo chips. I'm mad now.

The water is too cold for them now anyway. Hopefully buy the time it's warm enough the ammonia will be at an acceptable level.

I hope to move them either late late tonight or early tomorrow morning, hopefully before they eat all the eggs.

Well, I guess the up side to this all is that they've recovered from whatever made em sick....

best thing to do Cory_Dad
is as soon as they lay the eggs and if u see them fertilise them is to put ure hand in the tank straight away m8 to stop them eating them.
if its on the glass keep them away from the eggs wait about 4-5mins then remove the eggs from the glass with your finger slowly and carefully rolling them upwards and slightly comeing off the glass with ure finger this give the eggs time to harden and they dont lose the sticky ness otherewise u just pop them with ure finger if u do it straght away u dont have to keep ure hand in the tank all the time just keep the otheres from eating them .
they.ll have other things on there mind apart from your hand in the tank rolleyes.gif
just place them into were ever u want to put them to hatch Cory_Dad
when there on your finger or on the plants good.gif

Thanks drewry.

Where I want them is in the tank I'm collecting them from...

I tried what you said but totally botched it. I managed to get some onto some amazon sword leaves. The little buggers ate them all. I was totally not prepared for this.

Rolling on my fingers seemed to work but getting them off was a mess. I broke most of em so I stopped. I just don't have the small motor movement co-ordination for it.

I think they safest thing for me in the future is a massive jungle of java moss and lottsa cabomba. That formula seemed to work last time.

I don't know how much effort I should put into saving the eggs now vs. keeping the adults stress free and time to recover before I move them.

I need a leash for each adult where I can tie them up like my dog in the backyard so they don't go near the eggs...

And what's that in real weight?

Gotta love that 150 W Visi-Therm Stealth in the 20. I'm only 2F away from my target temp of 73F. It's really rocketing the temp up.

Momma looks beat. But they seem to like the freedom of the 10 gallon fry tank; they're swimming in the downdraft from the AC20. Haven't seen em that happy in weeks.

Ok, so 14 lb = 1 stone. Thanks, I always wondered what the conversion was.

About the moving, ya. I'm not sure why I'm so concerned about the eggs. I'm not doing this to sell them. The 10 gallon fry tank was supposed to be the laying / fry tank. When they first laid eggs it was in the 60 community and I managed to move the plant leaves and some from the glass. The second time they laid in the 10 fry but because of all the floating plants they didn't manage to eat many, if any.

I guess maybe I need to buy another 10 gallon for the laying.

My wife is going to kill me....

Oh for criky sake!

I moved the adults to the 20 (not many eggs left in the 10, and a lot have fungus to boot). At first they didn't look very happy, just huddled together. Now it looks like they're at it again! I don't know if it's a false alarm or if they're serious.

Never a dull moment...

Give those lads and lassies some extra protein for all the energy they are burning. They deserve some nice bloodworms or some live black worms if you can get some. Takes lots of calories to do all that dancing and spawning. That is really good news. Keep their energy up.

LOL

Well, their tummies are already full of all the eggs they finished off. And the guys don't need any more energy. They haven't left the female alone all day.

Oh crap! Did I get my Viagra mixed up with the sinking tablets?! JK

Since I moved em to the 20 gallon the males have also been chasing each other, deepening their color, fanning their fins and generally acting like peacocks. It's good to see the boys back in form.

Not a lot of eggs left and I can't tell if the ones that are are fertile.

Maybe they needed the protein after all of that. High protein quality food is always recommended for spawning fish. They need it to stay healthy.

No fight from me on that point.

Still no fry today. I looked at some of the eggs with a jewelers magnifier and see something in some of the eggs but don't detect any movement. The eggs usually hatch with 48 hours. If there's nothing by 18:00 EDT (24:00 GMT?) then I guess it's a bust.

Still have .5 ammonia in 20 gal. I did a 25% change yesterday and will do the same again today. It's rather troubling that I can't get it down with the water changes and ammo chips hanging inside the tank. Nitrite and nitrate is still 0. Maybe the tank will be cycled this time next year. I can only hope.

Parents doing ok. Quite active although a bit skittish when I walk by.

Frozen blood works are so messy. I think I'll give em frozen brine shrimp instead. With the high water circulation from the 2213 I'll also turn of the filter during feeding so they have some time to grab it. I've been feeding em nutrafin plus sinking tablets and have a cucumber slice in the tank as well.

Cheers.

I hope people on this forum don't mind me posting every day with my progress (blog like).

Have you seen NEONCORY's blog like threads? LOL

I turn off the filter often when I feed the black worms or flake, but I have had many accidents from it. I sometimes miss a tank or a filtr doesn't restart right. I love the old Emporers that could be turned down. Neither the Aqua Clear nor the Whisper turn down as much and they still suck up the food during feeding if I don't turn them off. sneaky2.gif

I got new Emporers thinking that they would have that feature, and they have been redesigned and don't have it! sly.gif
