Hey there, I'm new to breeding cichlids, actually haven't started yet, but I want to! I have read that Keyhole cichlids are easy to breed and good for beginners. Is this true and if it is, does anyone have any tips on tank set up and pretty much anything that is needed to get them to breed. Will just buying a male and female get me a breeding pair or should I buy more. I'm planning on putting them in a 29 gal by themselves for now will that be big enough. I wanted to use a sand substrate too, is that okay? Thank you, any information is greatly appreciated!!

If you can get a breeding pr then that helps otherwise buy a group of 6-10 young fish and grow them up together. When they start to pr off you can keep one pr and sell the rest. You could probably even keep two prs in a 30g tank if you have lots of hiding places, plants, wood, etc. Half flower pots turned on their side are good.
Sand is fine for the substrate. They don't need much coaxing to get them to breed. Once you have a mature pr and they are well fed, they will breed. Just feed them a varied diet and do regular partial water changes to keep the water clean. Then sit back and wait. While you are waiting you can start growing microworms and hatching out brineshrimp eggs. The newly hatched brineshrimp (nauplii) and microworms make an ideal first food for the baby fish. |

Thank you, and I suspect that then its okay to raise the 6-10 in the 30 gal. |

yep you can grow them up in the 30g and just get rid of the extra fish when you get a pair
