I got 2 Jewel Cichlids and 1 albino cory cat. Here are some pics and movies
Video: http://s170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/kr...jewel2video.flv Video: http://s170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/kr...nt=100_0880.flv Pic: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/kr...07/100_0884.jpg Pic: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/krib2007/jewel1.jpg And a full tank pic: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u274/kr...07/100_0888.jpg They are around 1 1/2 inches long. They are starting to show some red and started eating 20 minutes after being added. Any advice on taking care of this species. |

There are a few Hemichromis species out there which look alike making it a little bit difficult to accurately identify. They require a large tank as they are very territorial and a species only tank or other cichlids would make good companions. Make sure there is a number of caves for them to feel comfortable and to define their territories. Usually there is an aggression between them but from my experience it's nothing much to be concerned about provided the tank is big enough or else the stronger one would most likely kill the weaker one. They are very hardy fish and grow upto about 6". Give them good conditions and you wont regret the beauty they'll add to your tank. Enjoy your new fish!

You shouldn't really be feeding your fish that soon after adding them. Feed the fish in the tank while the new fish are in the bag, I don't feed the new fish until the next day.

If you want to breed them you should get about 1 male to every 5 female jewels. I got lucky and got two pairs from my first 6. Also if your planning on breeding them, get rid of the cory. My jewels are very mean when they breed. I cant even keep big pleco's. you should keep corys as 5 or more if you dont have that many already. Possibly more since their in with cichlids. Oh ya, mine really like banana!

My freind( head of the fish department) said that i dont need to be worried about the cory, becasue he said that they have barbs and the jewel wont mess with them snf they havent. He shoed my their 200 gallon tnak with like 6 corries( around 1 inch each and 1 and a half foot oscars. He said that those corries have been their for motnhs. He also said that when they first put them in the the oscars ate on and then spit it back out because of the spines. I will defo try bannan's.
