At my local aquarium they have these beautiful fish, which I only just found out by going to their website are African Cichlids, but they have caught my eye so much.

All they call them are "electric yellow", "electric blue" and there is this one that is a very very pale pink kind of like pearl colour but has a beautiful face.

They only call them the above names on their site, as well as on the tank at the shop.

What are they do you think?

I am very much attracted to them and are thinking about them for my next tank, but would like some info.

OK their Latin names are (if their what i think they are)

yellow cichlid = Labidochromis caeruleus

Blue cichlid = Haplochromis ahli

I got a tank with both living happily together the yellow labs will happily breed and get loads of fry, but the blues are difficult to rear the fry i find.

Thanks.

Can you keep it an all male tank if you dont want females and fry??

Also, what could the pale pink one be? Its very very pale pink, I think it has a slight tinge of yellow to it when its swimming in the light and its face is very attractive...

yellow labs..... very difficult to sex believe me, best way to sec females is when their holding eggs.

Blue's are easy to sex, as females are gray.

As for all one sex then their be plenty of testosterone flying around so would expect the weakest fish to be bullied badily.

As for the pinkish one no idea, dose it look like the bodu of the yellow lab?

Ok the pinkish one could possibly be a Neolamprologus caudopunctatus.

It has taken me forever to put all of the LFS african cichlids into google and its the closest one I have come up with.

Electric Yellows are in the MBuna family and the Electric Blue is in the HAPs family. E-Blues can be EXTREMLY Aggrasive. I had one in my tank about 4" long and he was the most aggresive fish I have ever seen. E-Yellows are not near as aggresive and both have completly different diets. What conditions are about the same.

You should not mix HAPs with Mbunas. Read up on the 2 first before making your descision. I gave my e-blue to a local fish shop cause I couldn't stand him anymore.

my friends is full grown 5-6 inches and its a pansy... i had to put it in my 10 gallon hospital tank for a night because it was not eating, it was getting really bullied, pore thing, it has ripped fins, and doesn't even look like a e-blue anymore! i had to take it back today becuase it was getting in worse and worse shape, i have him in my 25 gal with angel fish, loaches, and gouramis! and he still doesn't do anything to them, its kinda sad acctually, he also stopped eathing... again so i have been trying to hand feed him but he wont accept the fool the angel fish just scare him off and take the food along with the gouramis.

5-6 inch are far from fully grown for an blue ahli i got several fish that are over 12" and the yellows are currently 10" in big males.

They both nateraly do not co-habbit but in the aquaria it's common and they are ok as long as they have enough space.

My tank with them is 28' with around 300 adualt fish (only 10 blue ahli as they dont breed as well as the yellow's)

What fish are you referring to? Yellow labs certainly don't get to 10" - nowhere near.

No wonder the "yellow lab" is large - it looks like a hybrid. The body is too deep, the face is wrong and none of the lab variants have the blue colouration in the face and fins like the one pictured.

Lovely looking tank by the way. good.gif
