Hello all,

Not sure if i need to be overly worried here or not here but I noticed today that my male demasoni has a cloudy eye. He is very territorial with the other fish but normally just chases them away from his patch rather than a full on fight so I'm guessing he has knocked his eye against a rock/sand. Have checked all the other fish and they all seem fine.

Will this heal up on its own over time (Parameters are all spot on) or shall I add some melafix as a booster?

Thanks in advance,

Jive

A cloudy eye is normally a sign of infection, commonly known as "popeye" as the eye is usually swollen as well. The most common cause is poor water quality so i would test your water for ammonia, nitrate etc

Melafix should clear it up but if left untreated the fish could become blind in that eye.

Hi Ferris,

Thanks for the reply, I checked the water this morning after I noticed the problem and the results are as they should be - zeros across the board, Ph 7.6 and the nitrate 5.0 ppm

Having another look now the eye does indeed look swollen. I'm surprised I didnt pick that up on first inspection.

I'm going to leave the tank as it is for two days and see what happens and report back.

Thanks again

J

Just to add, I've had this on 2 occasions, 1 Bala shark and 1 Red tailed black shark and successfully treated it on both occasions with melafix - took about a week to clear up. good.gif

Melafix it now - regardless of the cuase - it is probably due to fish contact or damage in a fight or hitting a rock...

last night i had a VERY horny Acei WT.

This morning i have a female holding and the otherone with a cloudy eye, best bet is he was aggresive during the night, so i've melafixed it and IT WILL HEAL bcause of this.

leave it un-treated at your peril...
