Ok i have just bought me a ne 5ft rena tank... Im still smilling!
Problem is the filter will need cycling as its been dry for a while. I have another tank which will be retired from this and was wondering if i set the new tank up and use my old filter for a month or two will that be ok. BEFORE YOU ANSWER The new tank is 540L and my old filter is only rated for 250L the new filter is rated 750L if i split a bit of media and run both can i transfer my current stock with not cycling???? After a few month pass retire my old filter (Might have a few uses for it) Thanks antony |

Are you going to be putting any fish in the new tank. If yourm stock isn't to much i'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. I've got a new filter for my tank and i'm doing exactly that. I've tested the water a few times and have had no problems. If you don't put to much stock in at first i'm sure you would be ok.

If you are going to be moving all the fish to the new tank and taking the old one down, I would set the new tank up with both filters and simply move the fish and most of the water (so you don't have to worry to much about acclimation) over and finish filling it up. Basically, the tank is sycled for the fish you already have. You can run the old filter for a month or 2 and then take it off. Since the new filter is stronger than the old one, the bacteria will build in the new one (more water flow so more food for the bacteria) and decline in the old one meaning that when you take the old one out, you shouldn't really even see a mini cycle.
