I'd just like to say that the opaline gourami and gold gourami are color morphs of the blue gourami, I don't know why the opalne has a different size put down tongue2.gif

why do bettas fight with gouramis

Because bettas willl become aggressive with fish that look like them, and some gouramis look like bettas smile.gif

A lot of people seem to think that just because a fish is not called a 'gourami' it doesn't belong in the same group. Having said that, paradisefish (macropodus opercularis) also circulate under the common name of 'paradise gourami'.

Anyway, by deffinition, a 'gourami' is a fish from the family 'osphronemidae' or sometimes 'belontidae' (depending on how up-to-date your sources are tongue2.gif). The family is devided into a few subfamilies and these further devided into several genera. These not only include the common 'trichogaster', 'colisa' and 'trichopsis' genera from which we get three-spots, pearls, dwarf, honey and croaking gouramies, it also includes fish often not considered gouramies such as those belonging to the genera 'betta', 'macropodus' and 'ctenops' which includes the paradisefish as well as the various betta species including b. splendens and, the aptly named frail gourami ctenops nobilis.

Another related family of fish are the 'anabantidae' which include the ctenopoma and anabas genera. A lot of the fish found in the 'gourami' family were once classed in this family. These are not gouramies but very similar in many ways.

So to answer your question, paradisefish have always been gouramies. It's the common name (which is entirely irrelevant) that confuses matters. They could be called blueberry pies and they'd still be gouramies. tongue2.gif

edit: because not all the species names were in italics wink.gif

It would be better to post that in the main section rather than in this thread. I'll google 'tattooed' gourami and see if it turns up a scientific name meanwhile. But a picture would be best.

Hi jlunde96 smile.gif

Welcome to the forum! welcomeani.gif

Tattooing is the current "in" term for the cruel practice of injecting dyes into a fish for decorative purposes. ohmy.gif It is sometimes done to gouramis. Here's a link that shows a picture of one. Just scroll down to the "Polka Dot Gourami" to see an example of it. sad1.gif

I just realized I got ripped off at wal-mart. That's what happens when a guy who works at electronics gets your fish.I was supposed to get a dwarf gourami, which is 6.00, but he gave me a danded gourami, which is worth 4.00. I don't really care about the money, I just think they should get people to work at the fish section who can tell what fish they are, and get the right ones. no.gif
