PET CARE

1A St. Pauls Street,
Chippenham,
Wiltshire

Variety = 10

Quality = 11

Service = 12

I know it's suppose to be out of 10, but this shop is a prime example of what a fish store should be. The fish health ALWAYS comes before money, and the customer service is commendable. I wish all stores were like this. good.gif

Went in the other day to see what it was like, very cheap prices and very clean tanks with healthy fish...

Very helpful owner and nice to talk to..

I got a cave from there for my bristlenose plecs, it was £3.40 and elsewhere it as £6 so shows th prices here are great.

There are some hugely mixed comments on some of the stores in this thread and opinion is always valid whether it is positive or negative.

I'd be very interested if anyone has popped along to my new place of work which is at Pets at Home Aquatics Centre in Cheltenham. Hopefully people will find that the quality of the fish and also the advice you can recieve will be very good. We also now sell marines that I look after myself!

Any comments by anyone who has visited would be greatly appreciated!

Ben

Agreed. This is a really good shop. I visit it as a treat to myself about once every year. The only thing i would say is you might want to consider taking your own algae scraper when you visit as sometimes you can't even see the fish. Otherwise, good shop and well worth a visit.

Shelaghfishface, you should add a detailed review to the 'Scottish Fish Store Directory' too?

I'll base mine out of 10 considering everyone else has then.

Pets At Home - Aberystwyth (approx 45 miles)
Variety - 2/10
Quality - 1/10 (Hard to find a tank without dead fish)
Service - 1/10 (Staff don't know what they are talking about and can't even name some of the fish)

Arthur Newmans - Capel Dewi (approx 43 miles)
Variety - 3/10 (only sells extremely young fish but more variety the PAH)
Quality - 5/10 (would have given 1 six months ago but much improved now. Still the odd dead fish or diseased fish in tanks with fish for sale)
Service - 5/10 (Only 1 member of staff knows what they are on about and they work 3 days per week. The rest say "you will have to wait till he comes in" with anything!)

Porthmadog Aquatics - Porthmadog (approx 50 miles)
Variety - 1/10 (more thanks than species and never have a good stock)
Quality - 0.1/10 (disguisting, won't touch. I guess I am just as guilty for not reporting it. Fish are i'll, diseased and all look like they havn't eaten for ages)
Service - ?/10 (didn't stay to find out)

Porthmadog Pet Shop - Porthmadog (approx 50 miles)
Not sure if this is still open but
Variety - 2/10 (Only has around 10 tanks but most are goldfish, the few are livebearers but nice)
Quality - 8/10 (Best quality around me, had no problems and they lived for years)
Service - 6/10 (Nice people but don't know much)

I've been Wrexham a few times but can't remember the names of the stores apart from Dobbies, which were better than these but far from perfect.

Would love to hear about any good ones in Wrexham, Shrewsbury or Gwynedd.

Pets at Home - Great Yarmouth

Unlike many of the other pets at homes I been to in norwich this store seems to care for the fish and doesn't give out just anything to anyone. Tanks all clean and staff are there to help when you need to. Good choice of fish as well!

Oasis - Salford, Manchester

Variety - 9
Quality - 10
Staff - 10

I went to Oasis the other week and was impressed by the variety, plus the whole shop was clean and bright. Didn't see any dead fish, loved the place. EXCEPT I asked for advice, told them how big my tank was, what I had in it etc, and then bought a common plec off them... NO mention from them that he would grow to about 12 inches! So I am not overly impressed by this.... Good store but make sure you do your research!

Newbie adding to East Anglia. Please note my Marks based on my seeking advice, and general desire to learn before buying! Not an expert so ignore or dump if required.

Hellesdon Barn Aquatics-Norwich
Variety - 10 Great variety. Great range of equipment.
Quality - 10 Tanks are well maintained, no dead fish to be seen, not bought any yet, but this is 1st choice LFS. new stock had been just delivered and staff where inspecting well, taking care, etc
Service - 10 1 of only 2 LFS to understand fishless cycling, willing to talk and advice. Pointed out various sections in books giving advise. Forgot to ask if they donate media for cycling.

Swallow Aquatics, East Harling
Variety - 9 Great variety. Seemed to have more stock, and bigger then Hellesdon Barns. Only items they did not have where Juwel which I needed.
Quality - 10 Tanks are well maintained, no dead fish to be seen, not bought any yet, but this is 2nd choice LFS.
Service - 10 They did understand fishless cycling, may donate media, willing to talk and advice. Sell change water.

Stonham Barns Aqautic Centre
Variety - 7 Not a lot of stock, no plants.
Quality - 8 did not seem that clean, though no deadfish. Tanks had loads of food floating at midday, may have just fed!
Service - 6 Not very chatty, horrifed at adding ammonia for fishless cycling.

Kesgrave Aquatics, Ipswich
Variety 7 - Not a great variety.
Quality - 6 Looked dirty and a bit Heath Robinson. Last place I would buy fish.
Service - 6 Not helpful at all, no idea on fishless cycling. Recommendation, fill tank, add safe start, wait a week, then they will test water, and recommend fish.

Blooms Watergardens
Variety - 8 Reasonable stock, good plant display. Good range of equip.
Quality - 9 Looked clean, tidy, good displays.
Service - 8 OK when elder person is there, younger chap seems reasonably knowlegdable, Saturday girl bloody hopeless.
