ok

Porton, Salisbury, Pet and Aquatic
0870 770 10 11

did have a web site but down at the mo, will post when it back up.

veriety- 8 could have more.
quality- 9 never seen a dead fish, oh maybe one, octional ich nothing serious
staff- 10 great and friendly

I love this place I there every weekend, I shore they could make a small busness out the money I give them alone, it family run, all the staff are always willing to help, if they can't they find someone that will, of go look in a book. Nearly all the fish room staff have there own tanks.

Maidenhead Aquatics
Southamton

Veriety- 10 you name it they have it or can get it
quality- 9 don't remember seeing anything dead, or sick
Staff - 7 Ok, feels like they educate you to much, like treat you like you never had fish before, sometime over cousous to who they sell to. Not a major bad thing, just anoying sometimes.

Creature Comforts, Southamton__
Totton__

veriety- 7 dont seem to have many merines or cold water.
Quality- 6 the Platties always look ill, the gravel looks green, the fist time I saw it I hated the place, but they have got better, I balt the best mollies from them that I have ever balt.
Staff- 5 not wonderful helpful, or friendly, but they do try.

Cadnam__

Veriety- 3 can't remember much, the place looked like a building site though
Quality- 0 every tank look filthy and had sick fish.
Staff- -4 there was only one guy there and he spent most of the time on the phone to hi mate.

In over words DON'T GO

Pets AT Home, Andover

Veriety- 4 no merines, did'nt have any guppies for about 6 weeks
Quality- 3 only ever had one fish last for more than a week from there, there mollies are terrible. Tanks don't look to bad, but there are no signs put up when the fish are in quantine, and after looking round and desiding your then told there not for sale.
Staff- 0 Had to tell one guy how to sex livebearers twice, not helpful at all.

Here's my observations:

Petsmart (Farnham, surrey)
Variety 3 (missing staple fish, very little beyond tetras and goldfish)
Quality 8 (no dead fish, quarantine tanks visible and labeled)
Staff 4 (well meaning but essentailly hopeless, the little cards with traffic lights to indicate difficulty are more informative)
Price -decidedly ish

Maidenhead (Guildford, surrey)
Variety 8 (lovely big selection of discus and even some freshwater rays on my last visit)
Quality 9 (everything nicely presented, all fish looked healthy, one concern was huge catfish in tank only just large enough to turn around in but was labeled as temporary and RSPCA approved holding so confused.gif )
Staff 8 (knowledgable, when they know the full latin names you know your onto a winner!)
Price -ok
NB. Huge and gorgeous show tank of majestic discus and others

Tachbrook (Victoria, london)
Variety 6 (you know, usual, but with plenty of nice puffers)
Quality 5 (cramped horrid shop and evil jam jars for bettas in which one was dead)
Staff variable (young asian man is good but cocky, german dude sucks, girl is just as bad, owner is helpful)
Price -tending high
NB. Take a fan, this shops prefered method of keeping the tanks to temperature is to keep the heating turned up to max and then vent excess heat by opening the shop door!

Hope this helps wink.gif

hi
id like to recommend the shop tropicals & marines for anyone in the west london area.its a fantastic little lfs with a good variety of fish (lots of marines) & excellent staff ive always found them very knowledgable & helpful with any queries ive had. their range of equipment & food, meds etc excellent & all their display tanks are beautiful & look very well cared for. ive NEVER seen a dead fish in any of their tanks & all tanks have plants in them or other decor instead of the usual empty except for the fish for sale you see at so many places.ive also seen them add lots of different veg to the tanks of their stock to keep them happy & healthy. their big marine tank at the front of the shop is spectacular & i spend many an hour admiring it.
variety: 7/10
quality: 9.5/10
staff: 9/10

web : www.tropicalsandmarines.co.uk
address: 69-71 lower richmond rd, mortlake, london. 0208 876 5463

Sheffield Aquatics - Sheffield (duh ;o)) Langsett Road (nr Hillsborough, can get Tram)

Variety - 10/10 - Great selection of cold, tropical and marine fish, and plenty of them!
Quality - 9/10 I have started off my very first tank with fish recommended by this shop and have had no problems so far.
Staff - 8/10 Seem to be adequately educated, but are a little keen for the sell.

Other points - Great selection of rocks, wood, treatments, sand and gravel. Just above average price too.

Great shop.

Our local is:

Aquatic Centre (Tall Trees Garden Centre)
Lowdham Rd
Bulcote
Nottingham
NG14 5GT
Tel: 0115-931 2986

Variety 10
Quality 10
Price 8
Staff 10 (A++++) (Busy on Sunday's though!) If you can get during the week you can spend a whole day there chatting lol

I've been to other local shops around nottingham, including the world of water one not too far away - yes they have lots of new things to buy and look at, but no way would I buy fish from there, it goes for the rest of the local shops. I find the tanks small, dark, lots of dead fish, never any staff about sad.gif Not impressed, not sure how they manage to get good PFK results wacko.gif

Their fish tanks are large and you very rarely see anything dead in there, if you do it'll be removed whislt your there. The staff are very friendly, and will always go beyond what your would expect. (They stock plants too, not many and have them in the tanks that are suited to the conditions and fish)

The shop I have to admit is sparse, but if they haven't got it, they'll get it, and despite it being a few quid more than else where, once you've added petrol on top you might as well get it from there.

They do however have a great stock of meds vits, and the everyday stuff, they also stock good quality tanks hoods lighting gear etc.

Although I'm not into marines, I know from what others have said they do stock some rare ones. It has to be one of the best places where the fish are in larger tanks, they also keep comunity breeds with each other, and have a very good description with each fish.

They will not sell fish without water test results or at least a water sample (when you get to know them and are trusted, just the results on a bit of paper will do) smile.gif

We've travelled far and wide to see very commercial shops that have frankly let us down, we've been to all the local ones that are mentioned in PFK - and we always go back to the aquatic centre.

We've been going there for 4 years now, and I can't think of one single thing to say bad about them. The shop maybe antiquated for some, but they have everything you need smile.gif

The staff really do make the shop though, they're all fantastic with unique experiances in various types of fish keeping and pond keeping.

unsure.gif ummm gone on a bit now - but they're a great shop lol biggrin.gif

i have another 2 to add

paisley pet centre
glasgow rd
paisley

ratings
variety 7-8
quality 7-8, usually good but today the tanks looked like they needed a bit of work
with dead fish in a fair few tanks, and also a walking cat fish around 10"-12" dying fast

staff 7-8 just the owner himself

neon gecko
glasgow rd
paisley

ratings
variety 9
quality 9
staff 9

not the biggest of shops, for tanks as reptile and exotic birds are the bigger core of his business, but some really good fish at real good prices, a bit smelly though as in wiffy with all the snakes and lizards, tortoises, etc, and he has a load of different parrots in every time i go in, i think i will be chasing an african grey real soon myself, very nice!!!

I agree with you on this Ryan!

I used to live in Cambridge and used to sort out Scotsdales mobile phones, etc. Every person who i dealt with was an idiot (and they were upper management) so it's no surprise the lowly shop staff are too tongue2.gif

laugh.gif Just noticed this post, abit late. blushing.gif

Must say they have a good variety of fish though, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The staff have about half a brain cell between the lot of them and half of them refuse to speak, they just got in a Asain Arowana which they have over priced at £3,000. To top that they put it in a 10g with some Livebearers and Discus and have ended up with one severly stunted Arowana, shame.

Well I have to change my opinion of:

Endsleigh Garden centre (Aquatics Dept.)
A38 Plymouth

I've never bought fish from them due to the state of their tanks but have always admired their marine set-ups. Well, I have just got into marine and have been up there a few times now to get shrimps and soft corals and each time i've walked away with more than I bargained for biggrin.gif
I have had about £15 worth of free corals of them just by asking if I can have the 'broken' frags on the bottom of the coral tank.

So, to sum up = crap for coldwater, not too good on tropical but can't be beaten on marine

Just because they gave you free "scrapings" doesnt make them a good fish shop suddenly! lol smile.gif

That and the masses of advice and help they gave me when I was setting my marine tank up.

As marine is 'specialist' you only get served by the main people not the muppets, that helps too.
