I had no idea you could put cold water straight into the tank
 I thought you would risk giving the fish thermal shock if they swam into it?

Nah, most fish are not bothered by cold water, IMO most of them seem to enjoy it. In the wild changes in water temp are normal. I've swam in a spring fed lake and around 10 ft down you have a sudden 15*f drop in water temp all in around one foot. Water is way to cold for me too stand, but the fish never seemed bothered by it.
