Then they need to not purchase it in the first place or surrender it to someone who can take care of it. I've done it before, I had to rehouse 2 black pacu into a 4, 000 gallon aquarium after I realized I couldn't take care of them correctly.

Okay, we've already made our point. If the guy wants to listen, he will.

i saw a red tail at a garden center last week, crikey it was huge
its tank was only just big enough for it to go verticle and was only about twice the fishs length,it made me so angry seeing the beast being kept in those conditions that although i really wanted to start stocking my tank i refused to buy anything from there and now have to wait a few weeks till i get the time to go to another place from the sounds of things it wasnt even full size |

If you have done your 'research' then what is the point of this thread? If you had done your research, you wouldn't have made this thread.
In case you didn't know for one of these fish to be happy they need about 8500 gallons. This post has been edited by Luketendo: May 5 2008, 11:38 AM |

Educational purposes.... I meant that everyone has already had their say on what they thought about you keeping the red tail and yet people are still posting about how it is too small, etc, without even reading the whole thread. This post has been edited by invader: May 5 2008, 04:11 PM |

I just got my Red Tail Tiger nose catfish hybrid 4 months ago...and the cute little 3" fish is now 9" and eating anything even the tiniest bit smaller than itself. Great fish, I really like him...but he is not the Sorubim lima he was advertised to be. Nope.
![]() Currently in a 90 gallon tank, I know he will get too big for in a few months. I am planning on putting him into a 6 ft diameter pool 2 feet high. If he get too big for that, then maybe I'll invite him over for dinner But no, they shouldn't be selling these guys. They look so cute when tiny...so I can see why so many buyers get suckered in... ...oh and I had done my research, it was just on the wrong fish. The Sorubim lima shovel nose should have been happy in a 90 gallon. This post has been edited by Eviltoon: Jun 6 2008, 08:53 PM |

Red tailed tiger shovelnose? Ouch, both parents can reach 5' in captivity so a 6' pool is unlikely to be enough.

Red tailed tiger shovelnose? Ouch, both parents can reach 5' in captivity so a 6' pool is unlikely to be enough. Sad but true, and I have just spoken to someone in my area who has 3 of these beasts who are currently still young at the 2' stage. He has offered to take mine off my hands, as my guy will certainly begin eating his current tank mates soon. I really like this dude, but he is dangerous...and fortunately I can give him a good home. What in the world are these dealers thinking stocking their stores with new born fish when they get to be 5-6' long! I ponder who is at fault, me for believing I was getting a Sorubim lima or the guy who is selling them and calling them whatever he feels like. Should I have done more research??? Guess I will always be asking myself that question. Sad though, when you cannot trust the stores you deal with. This post has been edited by Eviltoon: Jun 9 2008, 05:26 PM |
