Gold Nugget Plecos grow to be about 7", yes? biggrin.gif

I don't believe I saw them on the list, but it's late and I'm tired, so forgive me if they are on there somewhere.

There are 3 commonly available Golden Nugget's - they are not easily distinguished and unfortunately only one of the 3 stays at that size - the other get to around 16". unfortunately fish shops will label them up as the smaller ones to shift them - not necessarily knowing (or caring) if they will get huge

What about the rubbernose pleco? At least, that's what Petsmart told me it was. They insisted that he'd only get 6". So far he hasn't really grown. He's so ugly he's almost cute...reminds me of a toad. I really love those Zebra plecos like smith has on his avatar, but everyplace I look charges almost $300USD for them! Actually, it seems that all of the really nice, smaller plecos are extremely expensive. Anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, and pics of my pleco for ID...

L204 flash plecs are lovely pretty fish, and only cost about £20 wink.gif Dunno how much that is in $ but it's fairly cheap as far as plecs go smile.gif

Rubbernose or Bulldog plecs will generally nto grow to their full 6" in thew aquairum. I have one and hardly see him, be he is nice.

And as for True Zebra's unless your are experienced and are going to breed them stay away as they are very rare (hence the high price tags). I hopefully will one day breed them, but thats not for a long time yet smile.gif

Good luck with the hunt for a god plec.

I'll second the Rubbernose/Bulldog pleco. I did a search on fishbase.org for Chaetostoma sp., and the two that seem to show up in fish stores most frequently (C. milesi and C. thomsoni - the one pictured in mbbowman's post) stay under 6 and 4" respectively. A quick survey of all Chaetostoma species shows that most of them stay under 8", but some of them get larger.

Thanks for the list, very useful. I'm looking at adding a 2 or 3 small plecs to my new tank which I will be setting up soon. Can anyone recommend a book on plecs?

Im assuming the sizes stated are the MAX size the Pleco will reach!?

Are there any online stores people would recommend to buy any of these Plecos? Or is ebay the way to go (seen a few expensive ones on there).

Getting a 35L tank and i love Plecos, so i want one, but obviously one that wont grow too big - dont want to have to give it away/sell it on.

Thats a huge help! Thanks!!
I was looking for something not too big for my cummunity tank so that has helped loads! smile.gif
I expected to see the blue phantom there. Might it go by any other name? If have I been mislead in thinking its a small variety?

Thanks

inspired by this list and the issue of small plecos i started another list on the wiki site i work on. and have found a couple, (although probably not easily found in stores), of others that can be classed in this list including Peckoltia braueri (4"-5" max).

We have had a pleco for about 4 years and he has grown and grown from about 2" to around 12/13" in that time. We bought a larger tank because he used to kick all the gravel and plants around but was okay with all the other fish. However his behaviour was no better in the larger tank, he uprooted everything. We have now had to put him in a tank on his own. Any ideas on what to do with him?

What size tank did/do you have him in? If you want to part company with him then you may find a home for him in the buy sell and swap section. If you don't want to part company with him then I'm not entirely sure what you can do to help modify his behaviour. How about starting a new thread with the question in the title, more people will see it that way. good.gif

Maybe, I'm not sure if the mods would appreciate thirty small pics worth of bandwith. Not to mention I would have to get permission for thirty different pics.

thanks for this awesome post smile.gif
