I just went to 3 fish stores today, and 2 of them both sold 'lipstick parrots'. God, just looking the things made me cringe at thoughts of how bad a tattoo hurts, and how that must feel on a fish. I can't even find pictures of them on google...
But they were truly horrid to look at. They had red dye printed sloppily on their lips. On their sides were very cheap and barely even distinguishable pictures of flowers and random colors. Flat out disguisting to see. And I think both stores were buying their fish from the same place, cause it was the exact same paint design. Makes me wonder if the workers even know what happens to them. But what do they care...Fish=Money and nothing more to them. Edit- http://www.langstropicalfish.com/gallery.a...pg§ion=Fish They had some with these exact same designs on them as well as the cheap and CRAPPY flower pic ones. Ah but that was before Defra started getting letters/emails from MP's from all over the counrty
Keep fighting, until the bell rings. As I said, we'd posssibly fail if we tried, but if we don't try we WILL fail. Even if we don't get anything changed, I'm glad I made the effort to do something about it, and that many of you also did too, those who still can't be arsed, come on, until that bill is passed or rejected it CAN be changed if it is the will of the people to get it changed, it will take you no more than 2 minutes to cut and paste the text and try to do something. I've had a reply from Matt Clarke from PFK
QUOTE Many thanks for your email. It's me you wanted, as I write all of the news for Practical Fishkeeping. Funnily enough, I spotted some of your posts on the forums linking to the site the other week. I've been lurking there a little to see what's been happening. It's great to see others in the fishkeeping community trying to help. I did consider setting up some software for the PFK site, so people could automatically send a letter to their local MP. However, unfortunately, as far as the forthcoming AWB goes, I think it's sadly going to be too late for any lobbying of MPs. The final reading of the Bill takes place in the Commons on Tuesday, and Defra has already said that this isn't going to include a ban on dyed fish. Much as I'd love to see them change their minds, I think it's rather unlikely. It might still be worthwhile raising the awareness of this issue with MPs, though. When the Bill finally comes out, it will allow other laws to be pushed through, and this might provide an opportunity for us to campaign against some form of legislation to stop this. I'll mention this on the PFK blog. The Dyed Fish Campaign (and hopefully my comments on the AWB) will be in The Telegraph on April 8th, so hopefully this will also bring the problem to the attention of others outside the fishkeeping world. Best wishes, Matt I asked for permission to post this email and got this: QUOTE No worries. Happy for it to be posted where you like. I'll add a blog entry encouraging readers to do write to their MPs when I'm in the office next week. I'll give you a plug in this also. (If that's OK with you!) Thanks for your efforts! Cheers, Matt So I think it's worth continuing to push, even though we may be too late to get what we wanted this time. Arfie |

Hi,
I have had reply from my local MP through the post and she is saying that the Animal Wellfare Bill is due to be passed through parliament on Tuesday 14th March, that is yesterday. Her exact words were: At time of writing, the Animal Welfare Bill is due to complete its passage through the House of Commons on Tuesday 14 March. This means the Bill has been subject to extensive scrutiny and consideration at various different legislative stages, before and after being introduced to Parliament. So back to me, I think that this will be made illegal from the 14th of March, but she also said in her letter that she will keep me informed in due course. I am waiting for confirmation of this. |

Well done guys, did you read the reply I got from Matt Clarke of PFK magazine, it was his article that set me off posting this.
He said defra had said it will not be in the bill this time, but if enough awareness is made of the subject, that it was possible that it may get passed as a law on it's own in the future. Arfie |

Hi all,
Just to say that following my email to my MP on Tuesday 7th March, I recieved a typed and hand signed letter (through snail-mail) on Saturday 11th March! He also stated that it may have been too late to add anything into the Bill. Arfie, thanks for the links to help Rachel with her protest, however they ran out of time in the seminar and she never got to do her presentation. Maybe next time though. Adam |

Well we've made the Practical Fishkeeping Magazine blog this week, you'll need to be signed up to access it, but the article is HERE
If someone with the knowledge that Matt Clarke has, still thinks its worth persuing further, come on guys get hasseling your MP's. And to the mods/admin, as we now have a link to this forum and this thread from the hobbies leading magazine, is there any chance of a pin or an explanation as to why you can't? Arfie |

Got a hand-written letter from the secretary of my local MP today and it said that because my local MP is away at the moment she has gone straight to Mr Ben Bradshaw who is the secretary of Environment, Marine and Animal Welfare.
Apparently he is going to raise my concerns in the house of commons and is going to respond to me as soon as the "issues have been addressed". Hopefully I will also recieve a letter from my local MP. Ben |
